What is the Rice Purity Test?

The History & Purpose

The original Rice Purity Test was created in the early 1980s at Rice University in Houston, Texas. It was designed as a self-graded survey for incoming freshmen to measure their "purity" in terms of life experiences, particularly those related to sex, drugs, deceit, and other activities that might be considered contrary to traditional values.

The test became a popular icebreaker activity during orientation week, allowing students to compare their scores and get to know each other in a fun, albeit sometimes awkward, way.

Our New Rice Purity Test (2025 Edition) is a modern adaptation of the classic test. We've updated the questions to reflect contemporary experiences and culture, making it more relevant for today's young adults.

While the original test was primarily used on college campuses, the internet has made it accessible to people worldwide, turning it into a popular online quiz that people of all ages take for fun and self-reflection.

How It Works

The test consists of 100 yes/no questions about various life experiences. For each question, you check the box if you've done the activity described.

Your score is calculated by subtracting the number of "yes" answers (checked boxes) from 100. So if you check 20 boxes, your score would be 80%.

Higher scores (closer to 100) indicate a more "pure" or innocent lifestyle with fewer experiences in the categories covered by the test.

Lower scores (closer to 0) suggest more experiences in these areas, indicating a less "pure" lifestyle by the test's definition.

Remember: This test is just for fun! It's not a judgment of your character or worth as a person. Everyone's life experiences are different, and there's no "right" or "wrong" score.
